It sounds exaggerated, but the basic method is surprisingly simple.
You don’t have to sit around trying to invent the next Facebook, Uber, or Instagram. You don’t need to know how to code. You don’t even need to start with an original idea.
Instead, start with an app that is already successful.
Find out what people love about it.
Find out what people hate about it.
Then ask AI to identify what is missing.
That missing piece could become your app idea.

The basic 60-second version looks like this:
- Find a successful app.
- Take screenshots.
- Collect screenshots of customer reviews.

You may have an interesting app concept almost immediately.
But finding an idea is only the beginning.
In this guide, I’ll show you how to turn that initial idea into something much more useful: a researched, validated app concept that you may be able to build using AI.
Step 1: Start With a Market That Already Has Customers
One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is trying to invent demand.
A much easier approach is to find a market where people are already spending money.
Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Search for categories such as:
- Calorie trackers
- Budgeting apps
- Fitness apps
- Meditation apps
- Language-learning apps
- Study apps
- Habit trackers
- Photo editors
- Travel planners
- Resume builders
- Parenting apps
- Meal planners
- Productivity apps
- Dating apps
- Personal finance tools
- AI assistants
You are not looking for a completely empty market.
You actually want competition.
Competition tells you people care enough about the problem to download apps and potentially pay for solutions.
Suppose you search for:
“calorie tracker”
You might find several highly ranked apps with tens of thousands or millions of reviews.
That is useful information.
It tells you there is already a large market for people trying to track what they eat.
Now your job is not:
“How can I invent a calorie tracker?”
Your question becomes:
“What do people dislike about the calorie trackers they already use?”
That question is far more valuable.
Step 2: Choose One of the Leading Apps
Pick one popular app in the category.
Study its App Store listing carefully.
Look at:
- The app name
- Subtitle
- Description
- Screenshots
- Features
- Pricing
- Subscription model
- Free trial
- Ratings
- Review count
- Recent updates
Pay close attention to how the company describes the problem.
An app might say:
“Track your meals and reach your health goals.”
That tells you the broad promise.
But customer reviews may tell a very different story.
People may say:
“Entering every ingredient takes forever.”
“The barcode scanner misses half my foods.”
“I hate searching for every item.”
“The food database is inaccurate.”
“The subscription is too expensive.”
“I stopped using it after a week since logging meals was annoying.”
Now you are getting somewhere.
Step 3: Take Screenshots of Everything That Matters
This is where AI can save you a huge amount of research time.
Take screenshots of:
- The main App Store page
- App screenshots
- Feature descriptions
- Pricing
- Subscription options
- Positive reviews
- Negative reviews
- Recent reviews
- Reviews mentioning specific problems
You do not need hundreds.
A useful starting point might be 10 to 30 screenshots.
Try to include a mixture of positive and negative feedback.
Positive reviews tell you why people use the product.
Negative reviews tell you what the opportunity may be.
Now upload those images into Claude.
Step 4: Ask Claude to Explain the Business
Start with a broad analysis.
Use a prompt like this:

Tell me:
- Who is the ideal customer?
- What is the main problem this app solves?
- What are the three biggest reasons people use it?

- What customer needs appear to be poorly served?
- What gaps might exist in this market?
- What type of customer might be willing to switch to a better solution?
- What opportunities would you investigate if you wanted to build a competing product?”
Claude can now act almost like a junior market researcher.
Instead of manually reading dozens of reviews and trying to spot patterns, AI can help organize the information.
That is your first 60-second opportunity scan.
Step 5: Mine the Reviews for Pain Gaps
The most valuable reviews are often not five-star reviews.
Look closely at one-star, two-star, and three-star reviews.
These users wanted the product to work.
Something disappointed them.
That disappointment can reveal a business opportunity.
Ask Claude:
Prompt #2: Find the Pain Gaps
“Analyze the negative and mixed reviews.
Group the complaints into recurring themes.
For each complaint, tell me:
- What users are frustrated about
- How often the problem appears
- How painful the problem seems
- What users currently do as a workaround
- Whether solving this problem could make someone switch apps
- Whether people might pay for a better solution
- How difficult the problem would be to solve”
Claude might return something like:
Problem 1: Manual food entry takes too long.
Problem 2: Users cannot accurately estimate portions.
Problem 3: Restaurant meals are difficult to enter.
Problem 4: The app requires too many taps.
Problem 5: Users dislike paying for basic features.
Now you have five possible opportunity areas.
Step 6: Look for Repeated Friction
A great AI app idea often starts with a sentence like:
“I hate having to…”
“I wish it would…”
“Why can’t this app just…”
“It takes forever to…”
“I stopped using it since…”
These sentences are gold.
They show where users are doing work that software might remove.
Suppose calorie-tracker users repeatedly say:
“I hate typing every ingredient.”
You now have a very clear target.
The current workflow might be:
Open app.
Search “egg.”
Choose egg.
Enter quantity.
Search toast.
Choose toast.
Enter quantity.
Search butter.
Enter quantity.
Search jam.
Enter quantity.
Save meal.
That might take several minutes.
Now ask:
Could AI turn ten steps into one?
Step 7: Ask AI to Remove the Annoying Part
This is where the app idea can become interesting.
Use this prompt:

“Look at the biggest customer complaints you identified.
For each one, show me how AI could remove steps, save time, reduce frustration, or make the experience easier.
Consider features involving:
- Voice input
- Image recognition
- Natural-language input
- Personalization
- Automatic categorization
- Recommendations
- Predictions
- Document analysis
- Camera input
- AI agents
- Automated follow-up
Do not suggest AI features merely for novelty.
Focus on features that remove meaningful work from the user.”
Now the idea might become:
Instead of manually entering food, the user says:
“I had two eggs, toast with butter and strawberry jam, and coffee with cream.”
The app analyzes the sentence, estimates the food items and quantities, calculates nutritional information, then asks the user to confirm.
One sentence replaces ten manual steps.
That is the type of AI feature worth exploring.
Step 8: Don’t Study Just One App
Here is a step missing from many viral “find an app idea” videos.
Never rely on one competitor.
Study at least three to five.
Suppose you research five popular calorie trackers.
Upload reviews from each into Claude.
Then ask:

Compare them.
Create a competitive analysis showing:
- Main target customer
- Core promise
- Major features
- Pricing
- Biggest strengths
- Most common complaints
- Features users repeatedly request
- Problems none of the apps appear to solve well
- Opportunities where a new entrant could offer a noticeably easier experience”
This protects you from making an obvious mistake.
You might think you discovered a revolutionary feature, only to find three competitors already offer it.
Your goal is not merely finding complaints.
Your goal is finding complaints that competitors still have not solved well.
Step 9: Generate 10 App Ideas Instead of One
Never fall in love with the first concept Claude gives you.
Ask for multiple ideas.

Step 10: Score the Ideas
Now make Claude act like an investor.
Ask it to score each idea from 1 to 10 on:
- Customer pain
- Market size
- Willingness to pay
- Competition
- AI advantage
- Ease of building
- Ease of explaining
- Ease of marketing
- Recurring usage
- Subscription potential
You could call this the App Opportunity Score.
Use:
Prompt #6: Score My App Ideas
“Score these 10 app concepts from 1 to 10 across:
Customer pain
Market demand
Willingness to pay
Competitive opportunity
AI advantage
Ease of building an MVP
Ease of acquiring customers
Recurring usage
Subscription potential
Overall business potential
Explain each score, then rank the ideas from strongest to weakest.”
You now have something far more useful than:
“Claude gave me an app idea.”
You have a ranked list of opportunities.
Step 11: Verify That People Actually Have the Problem
This step may save you months.
Do not build anything yet.
Search places where your target customer talks naturally.
Check:
- YouTube comments
- Facebook groups
- Quora
- X
- Product Hunt
- App Store reviews
- Google search suggestions
- Forums related to your niche
Search phrases tied to the pain point.
For the food-tracking example:
“calorie tracking takes too long”
“hate logging food”
“food tracking app annoying”
“easier way to track calories”
“voice calorie tracker”
“AI calorie tracker”
Look for repeated frustration.
If dozens or hundreds of people independently describe the same problem, your idea becomes more interesting.
Step 12: Check Whether Someone Already Built It
Search the App Store.
Search Google.
Search Product Hunt.
Search YouTube.
Search Reddit.
Ask Claude to help identify competitors.
If the idea exists, do not automatically give up.
Competition can validate demand.
Instead ask:
Why are people still unhappy?
Maybe competitors offer voice logging, but it is inaccurate.
Maybe they support photos, but not restaurant meals.
Maybe they are built for fitness enthusiasts, but ordinary users find them confusing.
Maybe they charge $30 per month.
The opportunity may be a better version, simpler version, cheaper version, or version aimed at a narrow audience.
Step 13: Find a Narrower Customer
Broad apps are difficult to market.
“AI meal tracker for everyone” is vague.
Try narrowing the customer.
For example:
AI meal tracker for busy mothers.
AI meal tracker for bodybuilders.
AI meal tracker for people over 60.
AI meal tracker for college students.
AI meal tracker for people eating at restaurants.
AI meal tracker for people who hate calorie counting.
The narrower idea can often be easier to explain and market.
Ask Claude:

“Take this app idea and identify 20 possible niche audiences.
For each audience, explain:
- Their strongest pain point
- Why current apps may fail them
- The feature they would value most
- Where I could reach them online
- Whether they might pay for the product
Rank the five most attractive niches.”
This can transform a generic app idea into a focused business.
Step 14: Test the Idea Before You Build It
Now show the concept to real people.
You do not need a finished app.
Create a simple landing page that explains:
- Who the app is for
- What frustrating problem it solves
- How it works
- What makes it easier
- What it may cost
Create a mockup showing the main screen.
Then show it to potential users.
Ask:
“What do you use now?”
“What is the most annoying part?”
“How often does this happen?”
“What have you tried?”
“Would this solution save you meaningful time?”
“What would stop you from using it?”
“Would you pay for it?”
Pay attention to behavior more than compliments.
“That’s cool” means very little.
“Where can I get this?” is much better.
“Can I sign up?” is better still.
Step 15: Build the Smallest Useful Version
Now you can start building.
Do not try to create the final product.
Build one useful feature.
For our example, the MVP might do only this:
- User speaks a meal.
- AI converts speech into food items.
- AI estimates nutritional values.
- User corrects mistakes.
- App saves the meal.
That is enough to test the core concept.
You do not need:
Social networking.
Achievements.
Recipes.
Challenges.
Complex analytics.
Community forums.
Twenty onboarding screens.
Build the central promise first.
Step 16: Use Claude to Help Plan the App
Before coding, ask Claude to create a product specification.

You still need to review what gets created.

How many people log a second meal?
How many return tomorrow?
How many use the app after seven days?
How many meals does the average user record?
How many people try the AI feature?
How often does AI make mistakes?
Where do users quit?
Retention is one of the clearest signals that your app solves a real problem.
Step 20: Figure Out How the App Makes Money
A useful app is not automatically a business.
Think about monetization early.
Common models include:
Free app with paid premium features.
Monthly subscription.
Annual subscription.
One-time purchase.
Usage-based pricing.
Business licensing.
Affiliate revenue.
Advertising.
Marketplace commissions.
For many AI apps, subscriptions make sense since AI usage often has ongoing costs.
Your pricing has to support your expenses.

Notice what is missing.
You are not trying to predict the future.
You are studying behavior that already exists.
People are already downloading apps.

You might get a terrible idea.
You might get an obvious idea.
You might get something someone has already built.
Or you might uncover a problem you had never noticed before.
That is why the 60-second exercise is so valuable.
You are not trying to build a million-dollar company in 60 seconds.
You are trying to find the thread that could lead to one.
And with AI helping you research, analyze, design, test, and code, following that thread has become far easier than it used to be.
