Step 1: Set up your Amazon Account
Setting up your account on Amazon is “a breeze”. This is what one of ASM’s top members is actually saying, so you can bet it is true.
In the past, ASM members were advised to sell only in the USA, as this was the largest market by far. However, as Amazon is growing rapidly, you can now sell in several other key markets: UK, Germany and Japan. If you live in one of these countries, I recommend you to start in these marketplaces. If you live anywhere else, you should start selling in the USA.
To get set up in the USA, you need to go sellercentral.amazon.com. Click the Register Now link and after filling in the details you will receive access to the account. If you live in the UK, you need to go to sellercentral.amazon.co.uk. The same goes true for Germany and Japan.
It’s worth pointing out that there are 2 main types of accounts: an individual account and a professional account. To get all the features you need in order to grow your business, I recommend you go with the professional account.
Step 2: Picking a Product to Sell
You can sell any product on Amazon, as long as it makes up the list of red-hot selling product. The products ASM members sell include fitness products, health products, home & kitchen products, automotive, camping or pet products.
Here are the 5 criteria for finding red-hot products on Amazon:
- Best Sellers Rank (BSR): BSR is how Amazon manages the demand for a product. The lower the BSR, the higher the demand. Each top level category has its own BSR. To start off, I recommend you to choose products with a BSR of between 500 and 5,000.
- Price: I recommend you to look only for products priced between $18 and $70. This price range is a sweet spot for providing enough profit margin while still cutting your inventory costs.
- Number of reviews: reviews are important because they give a good indication of the competition of the product. I recommend you avoid products with more than 1,000 reviews.
- Weight: stick to products that weight 3 pounds or less,
otherwise the shipping costs could start cutting into your profit margins.
- Private labeling: products with a potential for private labeling allow you to get your own version of the product and put your own brand in there.
